4 Leadership Values to Bank On

If you need to hone your leadership skills, these four standards are a great place to start!

Our recent blog post, Principles of Leadership: What Are You Building On? offered three universal principles of leadership: honesty, pure motives and respect. In a response to that, one of our readers shared four additional leadership values she’s used to sharpen and elevate her skills. Maybe you can too!

Leadership Values #1 Consistency

Our reader says:

“how important it is for followers to know they can depend on my consistency…”

Absolutely! When you are a consistent leader, people can adjust, adapt, even predict what your response, mood, or approach will be. Unfortunately, many of us know the boss whose mood is, let’s say, less than consistent — whose employees ALWAYS check the mood before asking, confessing or confronting a difficult issue. If it’s a bad day, they delay what really should be dealt with now.

Our reader nailed it:

“Good or bad day – it’s a work day, and work needs to be done. Tiptoeing around isn’t helping anyone – it just makes everything worse.”

Consciously choosing consistency as one of your leadership values will have a positive impact on how your people perceive you as their leader.

Leadership Values #s 2, 3 & 4  Passion, Optimism & Vision

From our reader’s perspective, these three leadership values are inseparable:

“I’ve been working my way up the ladder from the very bottom wrung. Small town girl with no college education, who came from nothing but a good strong mom and dad and just wanted to provide for my children the best I could; doing whatever I did with as much excellence as I could muster, no matter the task.

That’s Passion!

I’ve always focused on three things as I’ve pursued what seemed to many an impossible goal in my career: Passion – Optimism – Vision.  If I could just have all three of those and keep them fueled daily, I  could move ahead.

Optimism.

I remember when I first interviewed for my job in 1989. I walked past the executive offices and looked at them as if they were for someone else.

Then one day, I believed they were for me.

Just recently I was added to our company’s board of directors. What a huge honor!”

That takes Vision.

Would you agree, our reader said it well?!

Consistency — Passion — Optimism — Vision

Four leadership values you can bank on when building a career!
